Successful Tournament for U-16’s in Regina
The U-16 Boys returned home last night after a very successful tournament out east in Regina, Sask. The Hornet Classic brought together 108 club and high school teams from Alberta, Manitoba and the host province Sask. The U-16 boys were placed in a U-17 pool that consisted
of 20 teams so it was a true test of fitness and survival. The team opened play on Friday against Hutchings High School.
From the opening tip off the Dinos had their legs as well as superior conditioning and opened the tournament with a convincing 60-30 victory. A strong team defense with balance scoring was the key to this game. Top performers were “Player of the Game: Paul Ohlinger( back from a 2 week layoff due to a ankle injury)with 6 points, 3 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Leading scorer Jordan Tudor(also back from 3 week layoff due to an ankle injury) with 14 points, 4 rebounds and 5 steals, Ben Bertolami with 9 points 2 rebounds and 4 steals and Jesse Denscombe with 6 points, 11 rebounds and 1 block shot. A great way to begin the tournament.
The next day the Dino’s were up against a very strong aggressive team from La Bouldus High who lost in the city final to Campbell High this past season. A very hard fought and banging style of play La Bouldas was able to take a lead into half time of 10 points. The Dinos beginning the 2nd with a cold spell were not able to score for about 8 minutes and with that La Bouldas built their lead to 25 points with just under 10 min to play. The team did not give up and with a more aggressive defensive and offensive plan the team was able to chip away at the lead and were only 6 points down with just a few minutes left. If the team only had another 5 min the result would have been different but La Bouldas ended up winning the game 64-72. Player of the game for the Dinos was Jordan Tudor with 16 points(5-9 3 pt attempts), Paul Ohlinger
with 7 points and 3 steals, and Chris Loubardeas with 6 points, 4 assists, 6 rebounds and 1 steal. A great game as the team showed all who watched what hard work can do.
So after a few hours rest the team was back on the court with a match up vs. the Jr. Wesmen out of Winnipeg with the winner advancing for another day. The Dinos started off very well and built a lead of 30-18 at half time. Inspired performances by all the ‘Bigs’ of the Dinos was the difference in this game. From Jesse Denscombe who not only was involved in a 2-on-1 fast break with a finish but also stole a ball at center and went full out in attempt to jam it home. Things went slightly out of control for Jesse as his eyes were wide open, the ball was bouncing about 6 feet off the floor as he headed to the rim, he decided to use his patented move the power butt lay-up against the defenders face but was called on a charge. But his energy carried into all of his team mates. He finished with 3 points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal and 1 blocked shot. The team played a full 40 and was awarded with a 62-40 victory. Player of the game was Adam Weir with 8 points, 20 rebounds,3 steals and 3 blocked shots, leading scorer Fraser Wayne with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals and Jordan Tudor and Scott Veniot each with 8 points.
So the team lived to play on Sunday morning. The team was up against the Jr. Huskies from Saskatoon a team team again that liked to bang and be physical all the time-the Dino’s were up for the challenge. The lead changed hands several times through the 1st half with the Huskies taking a 39-30 lead into the 2nd half. The Dinos, with some defensive adjustments, were able to take the game to the Huskies and had the lead of 8 points with about 8 min to go. The energy and momentum the Dinos had was sure to take them onto victory. But, a nasty ankle injury that Fraser Wayne sustained with about 7 min to go seemed to have re-energized the Huskies and the run the Dinos had, seemed to disappear along with the lead. The Huskies ended winning the game 83-70 with the game much closer than the final score as the Dinos needed to foul late in the game to get the ball back. Player of the game for the Dinos was Chris Loubardeas with 11 points and energy he ustained all game long, Leading scorer Scott Veniot with 12 points, Jordan Tudor and Ben Bertolami each with 9 points and another big game
by Jesse Densombe who pulled in 14 rebounds. A very successful tournament and the team and coaches would like to thank all the parents who traveled to Regina to give support to their
son and the team.
Next action is this weekend as the team plays in the Sheep River Tournament.
