Dinos Begin Airdrie Elite Spring League Schedule
A tradition for the Jr. Dinos program, the 2007 Edition of the U-17 team took to the court at Bert Church High School in Airdrie for their Annual Elite Spring League. After just four practices and tryouts, the squad was assembled, and ready to go against the Pitsnogles, a team featuring former college standouts Kelly Lundgren and Kevin O’Reilly.
Working hard to get rid of some rust, and to adjust to their new teammates, the Jr. Dinos played hard against the veteran team. Despite a few lapses during play, the team kept it close, and made a run down the stretch, but were unable to come up with the victory. Final score - 103-91.
The Pitsnogles were led by the hot scoring of Lundgren and O’Reilly. Lundgren finished the game with a league best 47 points, many converted on lay-ups in the fast break, while O’Reilly finished with 25 points including a few incredible 3 point shots.
The Jr. Dinos had a balanced attack led by the imposing inside force of Dom Coward. Dom, a first year forward from Bert Church in Airdrie, led the Dinos with 27 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists. Other double digit scores included Trevor Debolt with 17, Ian Tomaszewski with 12, Matt Urbanowski with 10, while Brett Pekar added 8 and Kendell Boese with 7.
The Dinos will continue to work on their defense in the upcoming weeks to prepare for their first tournament, May 4th and 5th in Calgary. The Dinos take to the floor again on the 24th of April against the Old Ghosts, a team comprised of Bishop Grandin graduates who won the Calgary City high school title in 2006.
